THE ASSISTANT STORK
Your Document and Visa Specialist

Oh where, oh where do my documents go?
Oh where, oh where can it be? ...

First, you have to get your documents notarized, county sealed (in states where applicable), State Sealed, and finally to a Consulate or Department of State/Guatemala Embassy for authentication. Check here for Vital Records and Secretaries of State addresses, phone numbers and fees.

Always send your documents by FedEX, ExpressMail, Airborne, UPS... anything trackable. These documents are too precious to allow them to get "lost in the mail".

Be sure to include a self-addressed, pre-paid airbill with your request

Make your money order or cashier's check (they will not accept personal checks) out to "The Embassy of Guatemala". ALL Consulates and the Embassy charge a fee of $10 per document.

Your documents should go to the Consulate that has jurisdiction over the state your document originated from. If you do not wish to send parts of your dossier all over the country, you can send the entire dossier to the Embassy in DC. BUT if the document does not fall under the jurisdiction of the DC Embassy, it must go to the US Dept of State first. If the document DOES fall under the jurisdiction of the Embassy, it does not need to go to the State Dept first.

*PLEASE NOTE* The Embassy in Washington, DC does not provide same-day processing

If you wish to send documents to the Embassy in Washington, DC that do NOT fall under their jurisdiction, they must first be authenticated by the US Department of State:

The Authentications Office of the US Department of State
Columbia Plaza (State Annex #1)
518 23rd Street, NW
Washington, DC 20520
TEL: 202-647-5002 or
800-688-9889 (option #6)
http://www.state.gov/m/a/auth/

Fee: $7.00 per document

Make personal check, money order or cashier's check to "US Department of State"

This step takes 1-6 weeks by mail or 1-2 hours in person. (Which is why I'm a courier for the DC area.) But if you DO go in person, the Authentications office is in a shopping mall, the last "shop" on the left. Also, realize the US Dept of State will only process 15 documents per day.
